Man gets eight-year jail for causing maid's death, human trafficking

A Palestinian man has been found guilty of causing the death of a domestic help by not providing her with the necessary treatment and being involved in human trafficking.

According to local Arabic daily Arrayah, the Court of Appeal awarded a one-year prison term to the man in the maid’s death case and ordered him to pay QR200,000 as blood money to her kin. It also sentenced the man to another seven years in jail and directed him to pay a fine of QR250,000 for trafficking.
The convict is to be deported upon serving the prison sentence.
The court acquitted a woman - a GCC citizen - for whom the maid used to work before her death.
The woman had hired the maid through the defendant and asked him for her papers. However, he told her that the documents were still being processed and would be provided later.
After some time, the woman discovered that the maid suffered from acute bronchitis and frequently used an inhaler to deal with the problem. When she told the defendant about this, he claimed that she was only suffering from a cold.
One night, when the maid had a severe bout of coughing and also suffered from shortness of breath, the woman called the defendant to take her to a hospital. However, he did not respond.
The woman then took the maid to the emergency department of a hospital, but the staff there said they were unable to provide the necessary help as the patient did not have identity and residency documents. The woman then bought a few more inhalers from the pharmacy and gave them to the maid.
The next morning, the defendant visited the woman’s house and took the maid with him, claiming that he would arrange for the required treatment. Later, the woman found out that he had given the maid some antipyretics (substances that reduce fever) and brought her back to the house.
Eventually, the maid’s condition worsened and the employer asked the defendant to take her with him.
According to the daily, the defendant drove around the country with the maid for around two hours until he made sure that she died. He then went home, where an absconding maid helped him as he tried to remove fingerprints from the body.
They later dumped the body in the parking area of a building. A doctor living in the building found the body and reported the matter to the police.
Investigations revealed that the cause of death was severe bronchitis.
It also came to light that the defendant used to host absconding maids and let them work in other places for a portion of their salary and a commission.
