A woman and her teenage daughter were allegedly dragged out of their car and gang-raped by a group of men near New Delhi, police said on Sunday.
The crime occurred late on Friday night when five men stopped a car carrying a family near Bulandshahr, located approximately 65 kilometres east of the Indian capital.
"The men allegedly dragged the family to a nearby field and looted cash, jewellery and mobile phones. They later allegedly tied the men of the family with ropes and raped the mother and her 13-year old daughter," a local police officer, Rameshwar Singh, said.
No arrests have been made yet but a special police team has been formed to find the accused.
Women's groups have slammed local authorities and police in India for not doing enough to curb sexual crimes in a recent spate of violent attacks on women.
Last week, a 14-year-old girl from a lower-caste community died after being raped twice by the same man.
Sex crimes and attacks on women have been the focus of much public attention in India since the gang-rape and murder of a student on a New Delhi bus in 2012.
India introduced tougher anti-rape laws following the case, but activists say little has changed in attitudes towards sexual assault, adding that attacks on women and girls continue unabated.
