The former president of Singapore, S R Nathan, is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a stroke early yesterday morning, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.
The statement said that Nathan was currently in the intensive care unit of the Singapore General Hospital.
Nathan, 92, was the sixth president of Singapore serving two terms from 1999 to 2011.
To date, Nathan is the longest-serving president of the country.
He had already suffered a stroke in April last year, but was said to be recovering.
“Mary and I are sad to hear about former President Nathan’s hospitalisation this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family,” Nathan’s successor President Tony Tan said.
Although mostly ceremonial, Singapore’s president has some powers such as the ability to veto the use of government reserves.
