A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced an Indian traveller to six months in jail and directed him to pay a fine of QR20,000 for harassing an air-hostess while being in an inebriated state.
According to local Arabic daily Arrayah, the man was also sentenced to 40 lashes as he had consumed alcohol on the flight despite being a Muslim. He is also to be deported upon serving the sentence.
The defendant was travelling to Doha from India when he got drunk on board. He then tried to flirt with an air-hostess while she was serving food and beverages to the passengers, the daily said.
The air-hostess told investigators that the man held her hand, asked about her phone number and spoke to her inappropriately. She resisted his advances but he did not stop and it was clear that the man was drunk, according to the details of the case.
The woman then called an on-board supervisor, following which the passenger was given a written warning. He then threatened the air-hostess and pushed her aside, it was alleged.
When the aircraft landed in Doha, the defendant was arrested by security forces and the flight attendants gave testimony against him during interrogation.
