Carlos Beltran was traded for the third time in the middle of a season on Monday when the New York Yankees shipped the veteran outfielder to the Texas Rangers for three minor league players.
The Yankees received Dillon Tate, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2015 draft, in addition to fellow right-handed pitchers Erik Swanson and Nick Green as Major League Baseball's trade deadline came to a close on Monday.
The 39-year-old switch hitter Beltran has been the most consistent batter for an offence that has been struggling. He is in the final year of a three-year, $45 mn contract and is batting.304 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs with the Yankees.
The Yankees have lost four straight after winning 11 of 16 games and are seven games out of first place in the American League East Division. Beltran has batted.281 with 414 home runs in 1,507 regular-season games with Kansas City, Houston, the New York Mets, San Francisco, St. Louis and the Yankees.
The Royals traded him to Houston in the middle of the season in June 2004 and seven years later, the Mets dealt him to the Giants for Zach Wheeler. The Rangers will likely use Beltran as a designated hitter as they recently lost Prince Fielder to a season-ending neck injury.
