Judoka Rafaela Silva upset world number one Sumiya Dorjsuren to win hosts Brazil’s first gold medal of the Rio Games yesterday.
Silva, who also won the world title on home soil in 2013, sunk to her knees after winning the under-57kg final with a half point waza-ari score from a leg reap counter attack, before leaping into the stands to hug her supporters. London champion Kaori Matsumoto of Japan took bronze alongside five-time European champion Telma Monteiro of Portugal.

Thai lifters take gold, silver
in women’s 58kg
Thailand’s Sukanya Srisurat, who previously served a two-year ban for doping, pipped compatriot Pimsiri Sirikaew to gold in the women’s 58kg weightlifting competition at the Rio Olympics. Sukanya lifted an Olympic record 110kg in the snatch and 130kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 240kg, beating the silver medallist by 8kg.

Croatian army officer Josip Glasnovic won a tense shoot-off to secure men’s trap gold yesterday. The 33-year-old from Zagreb, tied at 13-13 in the title match against Italian Giovannni Peliello, held his nerve to claim the sudden-death phase 4-3.
Somerset farmer Edward Ling finished third for Great Britain, outpointing David Kostelecky of the Czech Republic 13/9 in the bronze medal match. For 46-year-old Peliello it was a case of deja vu as this was his third silver medal finish after Beijing and Athens, not forgetting his bronze in Sydney.
The man who beat him four years ago, Giovanni Cernogoraz, failed to make it out of qualifying, finishing ninth with only the top six progressing. The 2004 champion Alexey Alipov missed out by one spot but Beijing winner Kostelecky did squeak through in fifth place. Peliello had topped the qualifying sheets.
Glasnovic cruised through the semi-finals to the gold medal match with a perfect 15 out of 15 score where he was joined by Peliello, who only failed to hit the bright orange target once en route to the climax.

China wins gold in men's 10

China's Chen Aisen and Lin Yue as expected won gold in the men's 10 metre synchronized diving, keeping alive the country's goal of a clean sweep in all eight events. Teams from the United States and Britain won the silver and bronze medals.
With near perfect execution and synchronization scores over six dives, the world champions won by a wide margin. They were diving together for the first time at an olympic Games. It was China's fourth consecutive olympic gold medal in the event.

Cherry double as Aussies set up rugby final against Kiwis
An Emilee Cherry try double fired favourites Australia into the Rio women’s rugby final against New Zealand as they bid to become the sport’s first Olympic champions in 92 years. The Pearls were made to work hard by a doughty Canadian side but Cherry eventually crossed twice, each time the beneficiary of beautiful inside passes from Emma Tonegato, as they won 17-5.
Meanwhile Portia Woodman’s hat-trick inspired a dangerous-looking Kiwi side to a comprehensive 25-7 victory over Britain at the Deodoro Stadium.
