The Traffic Department at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) is installing five new hi-tech radars along February 22 Street, local Arabic daily Al Sharq has reported.
The initiative involves replacing the old cameras with advanced radars that can detect traffic violations such as overtaking from the right, not using seatbelts, talking on the phone while driving, hampering smooth traffic flow and other offences, the daily has learnt from a source in the Traffic Department.
The source pointed out that a single radar can simultaneously detect a number of violations.
Recently, Brigadier Mohamed Saad al-Kharji, director-general of the Traffic Department, had said 52 new radars had been installed at different locations in the country to detect offences such as overtaking from the right.
He said the new equipment had been installed in places such as Al Waab, Airport Road and others. There are plans to put up more such radars to curb dangerous driving practices.
