Legendary Brazil centre-forward Ronaldo joined his 2002 World Cup-winning captain Cafu and teammates Lucio and Denilson in passing by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s (SC) booth at Bayt Qatar in Rio de Janeiro, and said the 2022 tournament will be a game-changer for fans.
Ronaldo, who with eight goals was the Golden Boot winner in the 2002 World Cup, welcomed the SC’s plans for modular seating with many of the stadiums at the 2022 World Cup Qatar.
As part of the SC’s sustainability commitment, the modular upper seats of stadiums such as Al Rayyan and Al Bayt – Al Khor City will be donated to developing nations.
“I am happy that Qatar is thinking about stadium infrastructure after the 2022 World Cup,” the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid striker exclusively told www.sc.qa. “We had also looked at downsizing of stadium seating after the 2014 World Cup Brazil as a legacy initiative,” he added. “It is good to note that Qatar are thinking in this direction.”
Ronaldo, who also scored four goals in the 1998 World Cup in France, was briefed at length about Qatar’s progress in preparing for the second ever edition in Asia.
The man nicknamed ‘Il Fenomeno’ (the Phenomenon) during his time in Italy, said he appreciated the concept of the compact World Cup which Qatar will be introducing to global football fans for the first time. “The opportunity to watch two or three World Cup matches a day will be path-breaking from a fan’s perspective,” he said.
The man considered by many as the best ever centre-forward in the game’s history concluded by saying that he is also impressed by the stadium cooling technology which is being developed by SC as a legacy initiative.
“I have heard about the technology and I think it will make a positive change to the future of football,” said the man who scored 62 international goals in 98 appearances including 15 in the World Cup.
The SC’s booth at Bayt Qatar received many visitors including members of the Brazilian public, global media and sports administrators. A number of former footballers and coaches including Cafu, Dunga, Lucio, Denilson, David Trezeguet and Christian Karembeu also visited the booth during the course of the 2016 Olympic Games that concluded on Sunday.
