El Jaish coach Sabri Lamouchi was left to rue a “very bad night” as the Qatari side suffered a 3-0 home reversal to Al Nasr in the first leg of their 2016 AFC Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.
After an even first half at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium, Wanderley gave the Emiratis the lead on the stroke of half-time, before Jonathan Pitroipa put the visitors two goals to the good early in the second half.
And Wanderley’s second of the night with six minutes remaining then ensured El Jaish have a mountain to climb in September’s second leg if they are to reach their first ever semi-final of Asia’s premier club competition.
“I do not know what happened, we are really disappointed,” said Frenchman Lamouchi. “Of course it is a very bad result at home – we started not so well, but after an hour we came back.”
“We made a lot of mistakes and Al Nasr scored all of their opportunities. Maybe we had more opportunities but this is football.”
“It was a very bad night, game and result. Nothing is impossible in football, but we must play with a different attitude and miss less.
no hamedallah”
El Jaish went into the clash without the injured Hamedallah Abderrazzaq, who had notched four goals as the Qatar Stars League side advanced to last eight for the first time.
And Lamouchi’s team rarely threatened the Al Nasr goal, even after the half-time introduction of new signing Seydou Keita, whose late header was cleared off the line by Ahmed Al Yassi to deny El Jaish a lifeline.
“We talked about Hamedallah’s injury – of course it’s very bad for him and a big difference for us,” added Lamouchi. “Sometimes it is like this, but we will never give up.”
“We must find a solution in the middle [of the park], but not only there. We missed a lot of chances and it was totally wrong.”
If El Jaish are to upset the odds and advance to the last four, they will need a repeat of the performance that saw them claim a resounding 4-0 victory over countrymen Lekhwiya in the first leg of their last 16 encounter in May.
“We have one chance, not more,” conceded Lamouchi.
“About this chance, I need to see my team with a different attitude.”
Jaish will truly have to produce a tremendous performance if they are to overturn this deficit in the second leg.
