The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has issued the notice, on its amnesty announcement for illegal residents, in 11 languages in preparation for the three-month grace period, which comes into effect from Thursday.
The notice is available in Arabic, English, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, Tamil, Tagalog, Sinhalese, Malayalam, Indonesian and Bengali.
On August 24, the MoI had announced the three-month amnesty for illegal residents to leave the country without facing any legal consequences for their overstay. The grace period ends on December 1.
A ministry spokesperson said more than 90% of the Asian expatriate communities have been reached through the outreach initiative and about 73,000 email copies of the announcement are being sent to companies and representatives of forums representing expatriates.
This is being done to help the companies and their officials ensure the exit from the country of those working for them without proper documents, the MoI official clarified.
Under the amnesty scheme, foreigners residing in Qatar in violation of the provisions of Law No 4 of 2009 Regulating the Entry, Exit, Residence and Sponsorship of Expatriates can exit the country without any legal consequences.
Illegal residents may approach the MoI's Search and Follow Up Department on Salwa Road between 2pm and 8pm, from Sunday to Thursday, with any of the relevant documents - original passport, travel papers (including the ‘out-pass’ issued by embassies), open airline tickets or visa copy at the time of their entry – to complete the exit procedures.
Confirmed air tickets from three days after submitting applications for exiting the country would also be entertained at the office, queries found.
Some of the south Asian embassies have said they would make arrangements for their overstaying nationals to leave Qatar, making use of the amnesty scheme.
This is the first such grace period in 12 years and the third ever in Qatar, Gulf Times had reported.
About 6,000 illegal residents had availed of the scheme in the first three months between March 21 and June 20 during the last amnesty announced in 2004. Later, the grace period was extended by one month until July 20, and more people had reportedly utilised the offer to go back to their home countries.
