MEC spots 16 consumer violations at shops selling mobile accessories

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has spotted 16 consumer violations during a sudden inspection campaign on shops that sell mobile phone accessories.
The campaign resulted in 16 fines and the confiscation of 693 counterfeit accessories including chargers, earphones and phone covers. It was conducted by MEC as part of its assessment strategy to ensure the compliance of suppliers (retail outlets) with law number (8) of 2008 on consumer protection.
The inspection campaign comes in the course of MEC’s efforts to crack down on price manipulation and protect consumer rights.
Penalties for violating law number (8) of 2008 include administrative closures, in addition to fines ranging between QR3,000 and up to QR1mn in line with applicable consumer protection laws.
MEC stressed that it will not tolerate any violations of the Consumer Protection Law and its regulations, and urged all consumers to report any violations to the Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud department.
