QR16mn access road to treatment plant opens

The QR16mn access road to the Umm Birkah Package Treatment Plant (PTP), has been opened for traffic.
The project aims at providing a direct link between the PTP and the main road from Al Khor to Ras Laffan Industrial City through the 2km road, having two lanes in each direction.
The road has entrances connecting it to Ras Laffan main road, and ends with a roundabout with three exits serving the treatment plant gates.
The project also included constructing six concrete tunnels to protect Qatar Petroleum’s gas pipes in the area and three tunnels for storm water pipes, in addition to road pavement works.
Street lighting, signage and all safety requirement were done as part of the project in addition to telecommunications and Kahramaa connections and preparing designated areas for future public services.
Ashghal implemented the Umm Birkah PTP project - with a capacity of 10,000 cu m per day - as part of its plan to stop sewage transportation with tankers to the liquid waste lagoon facility at Al Karaana completely.
The plan also included construction of infrastructure to receive sewage tankers at the existing and new treatment plants besides sewage from areas that were not connected to sewers until the completion of drainage projects in these areas.
The treated water from the Umm Birkah plant will help in irrigation purposes for the Al Rakia fodder farm.
