Sudanese president hails Emir’s role in Darfur peace

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has hailed the role of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in bringing peace to the Darfur region, commending the efforts he made to achieve stability across Sudan.
The president made the remarks during a speech yesterday at the celebration of completing the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, which took place in Al-Fashir in the Sudanese state of North Darfur.
“Sudan’s government and people highly appreciate the unlimited support the State of Qatar has offered and the efforts it exerted to bring peace to the Darfur region and in Sudan in general,” President al-Bashir said, noting that the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur was comprehensive and complete.
In his address, the president announced the end of the term of the Darfur Regional Authority and the beginning of a new phase so as to complete the peace process, reiterating his intention to grant general amnesty to all armed movements who wish to join the peace march.
He also declared the end of fighting completely, vowing to continue the process of construction and reconstruction until the full achievement of peace.
Chadian President Idriss Deby said the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur was met with support and backing that helped it achieve the current successes, praising the role of the wise Qatari leadership, and especially HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, in establishing peace in Darfur.
He noted that Qatar was able, through follow-up and support, to accomplish unprecedented achievements that brought stability to the region.
The Chadian president, as chairman of the current African Union session, stressed the AU’s support for peace in Darfur, saying that the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur was the basis of the peace process in the region, calling on all armed movements to join it as soon as possible.
Tijani Sese, head of the Darfur Regional Authority, announced in a speech, the end of war in Darfur. “More than 85% of the articles of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur have been implemented on the ground and the remainder will be implemented within a short period,” he said.
Qatar has hosted successive rounds of peace talks between the Khartoum government and the rebels.
“We declare to all the people of Darfur and Sudan.. that we have implemented our commitments,” President al-Bashir said in his speech.
“Darfur is better today than yesterday. And tomorrow it will be even better.”
Bashir vowed to develop the region.
“We will build roads and better education, health, water and electricity facilities... We will also undertake reconciliation among all Darfur tribes,” Bashir said to supporters’ cheers.
Many in the crowd carried pictures of al-Bashir and the Emir.
