Sri Lanka's main international airport will be partially shut down for several hours a day for three months next year for major renovations, the Civil Aviation Authority said on Friday.
Bandaranaike International Airport, 23 kilometres north of the capital Colombo, will be closed for eight hours a day from 8:30 am each day, a spokesman said. This will allow renovation
work, including a resurfacing of the runway, to go ahead.
Sri Lanka has negotiated with international airlines to reschedule their flights during the period, the spokesman said.
The 58-year-old airport currently operates some 185 flights per day.
Sri Lanka has a second international airport built with Chinese assistance in Mattala, 262 kilometres south-east of the capital, but the airport receives little traffic due to its location.
