The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) recently organised a training course for school nurses as part of its ongoing efforts to provide special development services for school health programmes. The corporation also plans to implement triage system from this academic year in schools.
The programme aimed at improving the efficiency and performance of school nurses and enable them to perform their responsibilities and duties in a better manner. The training course included a number of guided and applied workshops that dealt with various topics related to child care.
The programme included training in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), where the participants were provided training in administering CPR in case of anyone suffered cardiac arrest and stopped breathing, as well as special care for cases of cardiac arrest.The nurses were given inputs on modern scientific studies and scientific evidences for handling any cases related to cardiac arrest.
The sessions had workshops on how to assess the cases faced by nursing staff in the school clinic, prioritise them and the ways to deal with them. The nurses were also advised how to detect allergies caused by certain food items as well as the medicines that are allowed to be used in the school clinics for students.
The programme also educated the nurses on how to evaluate cases on scientific grounds and ways to deal with them by following the triage system that will be implemented in schools from the beginning of the new academic year.
The topics of the training programme were presented by a group of specialists and supervisors from PHCC and the Ministry of Public Health. Afrah Mosa, director of services and programmes of school health at PHCC said the training course targeted all the nurses of school health programme. They were divided into five groups and were distributed in accordance with the schedule of the session.
“This training course is part of the school health programme for the development of nursing skills and services plan and based on the role played by the PHCC in health education against all diseases and epidemics that threaten the life of the community, especially school students. The PHCC is seeking to raise the efficiency and skills of nursing staff in schools through such training courses, as they play a pivotal role in achieving the Corporation’s vision and mission at improving the health and well-being of the individual and society,” she added.
