Qatar has donated $10mn to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The announcement was made by HE Dr Hanan Mohamed al-Kuwari, the Minister of Public Health at the Fifth Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, held in Montreal, Canada.
 A large number of world leaders and representatives of governments have attended the meeting. Addressing the delegates, HE Dr al-Kuwari, said the sum will be directed to the countries of strategic importance for Qatar Development Fund, in particular in the Middle East.
She said: “It is my pleasure to announce in the name of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, the full support of my country to the sublime target of eradicating by 2030 three epidemics considered the most destructive in the world - Aids, tuberculosis and malaria.”
She pointed out that the money ($10mn) donated by Qatar through Qatar Development Fund to the Global Fund, is considered the first pledge of support and continuing the work throughout the upcoming years. She also praised the efforts of the Global Fund and the vital role it plays in accelerating the efforts to eradicate the said three epidemics in the world.
“While this contribution is considered our first to the Global Fund, it also forms part of Qatar’s continuous commitment to be a main partner among the donor countries. This was clearly displayed in supporting the humanitarian and development programmes and giving grants to more than 100 countries. Recently, Qatar renewed its commitment during its participation at the World Humanitarian Summit,” she said.
The conference targets contributions totalling $13bn to fund activities related to fighting and treating Aids, tuberculosis and malaria epidemics during 2017- 2019.
