Nepali expats in Qatar celebrated their country’s first National Day on Tuesday, September 20. A programme was organised by the Embassy of Nepal on the occasion from 6pm to 8pm.
The programme started with Nepal’s national anthem and was hosted by Gayatri Poudel, the second secretary at the embassy. A large number of Nepali expats, including businesspersons, social workers, journalists and community leaders attended the programme. The embassy’s staff members also attended.
The National Day was declared last year on September 20, as the country passed its first democratic constitution, after a period of six decades.
The programme started with a minute-long silence in respect of the martyrs. Acting Ambassador Mani Ratna Sharma then inaugurate the programme with the lighting of a candle.
In his speech, Sharma talked about Nepal’s friendly relations with Qatar since 1988. Nepal set up its embassy in Doha in 2000, while Qatar set up its embassy in Kathmandu in August 2011. He also thanked the government of Qatar for hosting more than four hundred thousand Nepali workers. He hoped that the government will continue to support them.
