The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) organised a cultural extravaganza on Friday to celebrate the 70th Independence Day of India.
A large number of community members were present to watch the performances by cultural organisations affiliated to the ICC and Indian schools.
Indian ambassador Sanjiv Arora, second secretary and ICC co-ordinating officer K S Dhiman, ICC president Girish Kumar and several prominent community members were present.
The programme started with a tribute to the Indian army and the 18 soldiers who were killed in a recent terrorist attack in India. The screening of two documentaries featuring the brave acts and sacrifices of the Indian army went down well with the audience. To show solidarity and as a mark of respect to the departed soldiers, one minute of silence was observed during the function.
A souvenir was released highlighting the activities of ICC for the current year. The national award winning teacher and the principal of Shantiniketan Indian school Dr. Subash B Nair was honoured on the occasion while the toppers of the science and commerce streams in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examinations 2016 were also awarded mementos.
Ambassador Arora, who is leaving the country as his tenure is coming to an end, was given a farewell during the event. ICC president Kumar recalled the efforts of the envoy in strengthening the relationship between Qatar and India and his services to the community. The community members presented the envoy with a memento.
The cultural performances highlighted the unity, diversity and rich heritage of India. Patriotism was the common thread of the dances and skits. The programmes were presented by more than 200 artistes.
