The Delhi government will give Rs10mn to the family of a school teacher stabbed to death by two students, it was announced yesterday.
Mukesh Kumar, a government school teacher at Nangloi here, was stabbed on Monday by two Class XII students in front of their classmates for allegedly having them suspended for low attendance.
He succumbed to his injuries in a hospital yesterday.
The two suspects, one of whom is a minor, have been arrested, police said.
“Both students were frequent absentees and indisciplined. Kumar used to point that out and take steps to correct them and maintain discipline in the school. The minor student was suspended from the school because of poor attendance,” Joint Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak said.
“The accused on interrogation revealed that they planned to teach Kumar a lesson and accordingly bought a knife and stabbed him. After committing the crime, they roamed around Nithari lake and Begumpur area before they were arrested,” said Pathak, adding that the knife and a blood stained clothes were recovered from them.
“There can be no compensation for the family’s agony... The government will give Rs1 crore to his family as immediate financial assistance,” Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.
He added that there are around 2.6mn students studying in Delhi schools and one cannot call all of them criminals because of the criminal tendencies of just two students.
“I appeal to the parents to talk to the children and teach them to respect our teachers,” he said.
Sisodia visited Kumar in the hospital on Monday night and spoke to the doctors as well as his family members.
