The Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Centre (QTTSC) at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) recently hosted a roundtable on road safety in collaboration with the International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences (IATSS) in Japan.
The event brought together experts from QTTSC, IATSS, the National Traffic Safety Committee, Qatar Ministry of Interior (MoI) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). It aimed to exchange information in policies, strategies and technologies to improve traffic safety conditions and to overcome
challenges in Japan and Qatar.
The programme agenda included presentations delivered by IATSS project leader prof Hideki Nakamura, Qatar National Traffic Safety Office manager Prof Kim Jraiw, Public Works Authority (Ashghal) consultant engineer Fabian John Marsh, director of Hamad Injury Prevention Programme at Hamad Trauma Centre Dr Rafael Consunji and QTTSC research associate Dr Mohamed Kharbeche.
They discussed topics related to “Status of Traffic Safety in Japan; Achievements and Challenges”, “National Policies and Strategies in Traffic Safety in the State of Qatar”, “Public Authority Works (Ashghal) role in building engineering safer roads in Qatar”, “Road Safety Research from the Hamad Trauma Centre: what does the evidence tell us?”, and “Trends of Traffic Crashes in the State of Qatar”.
Dr Khalifa al-Khalifa, dean, CENG, said the event aligns with CENG’s commitment to raise community awareness of the importance of traffic safety, which represents an important pillar of the college’s research plan.
Prof Nakamura added that the partnership with QTTSC on projects and programmes related to traffic safety contributes to pursuing advanced studies in areas that benefit the society in Qatar and Japan.
