A food storage facility located inside a house in Al Sheehaniyah and a restaurant in the Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality area have been closed down for violating norms.
An administrative decision was issued by Al Sheehaniya Municipality director Mohamed Saif al-Hajiri to permanently close the unlicensed storehouse.
Similarly, Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality director Juma Khamis al-Muraikhi issued an administrative decision to close a restaurant for seven days for violating food safety regulations. Food unfit for human consumption was found at the eatery.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME)’s General Cleanliness Department, in co-operation with Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality, removed 150 tonnes of sand that had accumulated on roads and walkways in the Al Thakhira area. The beach at Al Thakhira was cleaned as well.
The Al Wakrah Wildlife Unit detected 20 bird traps in the southern region, while the Al Mazrouah Wildlife Unit found five bird traps in the eastern region. Legal procedures were initiated for these violations.
The technical inspection section at Umm Salal removed some unauthorised fences built on state property in the Al Kharaitiyat area.
Awareness lecture on food wastage: The Agriculture Affairs Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has conducted an awareness lecture on limiting food wastage
to enhance Arab food security.
The workshop was held on the occasion of Arab Agriculture Day, which falls on September 27. The lecture was delivered by Dr Emad Hussein al-Traihi, an agricultural expert at the department, who provided statistics on food wastage in the Arab world.
In 2014, the wastage amounted to 85.98mn tonnes in the Arab world, representing around 24% of the production available for human consumption, it was observed. Globally, the amount was estimated at 1.3bn tonnes for the same period, amounting to 33% of the global food production.
