Retailers in Doha seek cut in rents

Close on the heels of a government-backed real estate development announcing reduction in the rents of some of their commercial properties, requests for such cuts have been aired by retail establishments elsewhere in Doha.
Those seeking reduction in rents say they are facing a slowdown in business and hence deserve a big slash in the "huge" rents they are paying.
Some of them said landlords should take a cue from the latest offers made by management of Barwa Commercial Avenue (BCA) and come out with similar offers to their tenants.
"Notwithstanding the abundant supply of commercial properties across Doha the rents continue to remain high in the local market," some of the retailers said.
"Such high rents have always been an obstacle for business development," said a retailer, adding that steep rise in commercial rents has resulted in the closure of several establishments in the last few years.
The management of BCA recently offered massive discounts to potential tenants.
In March also the company gave attractive offers to retain its customers at the sprawling property spread over 7km along the Doha-Industrial Area road.
