After 371 days of absence, Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) returned successfully Saturday to Ascot in the John Guest Bengough Stakes (Gr3), over 1,200m.
On a soft ground, Shalaa, ridden by Frankie Dettori, did not detach himself, but he managed to pass the post in front, which makes it his sixth consecutive win. Winner of Morny and Middle Park Stakes (Gr1) in 2015, Shalaa is trained by John Gosden.
“We would love to have been in the Commonwealth Cup and July Cup,” said Gosden, “but it was not to be and we have been fortunate to have this prep race for two weeks’ time. He was just full of himself and I told Frankie he was carrying his stick just for balance - not to use it. He will come back for the Champion Sprint but we know softer ground compromises a horse, who is all about pure speed.”
