A UN official has praised Qatar for the positive developments in the field of human rights and the clear commitment to the rule of law.
Speaking to Qatar News Agency, Obaid Ahmed al-Obaid, Director of the United Nations Centre for Training and Documentation in the field of Human Rights for South-West Asia and the Arab region in Doha, said the Qatar’s commitment to the rule of law has a positive impact on human rights in the country.
He said Qatar has committed to providing its international reports, and actively participates in discussions at the international level.
Obaid, who was appointed Director of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Yemen, praised the development in human rights institutional work in Qatar, and the political will to advance in this field, which requires greater understanding of the community.
He highlighted important role of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and its support for the UN Centre in its activities and events aiming to promote the culture of human rights.
He referred in this regard to the NHRC’s role in the establishment of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions in Doha.
He explained that the UN Centre, through its co-operation with the network, was able to spread its message and achieve its objectives.
Obaid said that the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior is an important partner of the UN Centre, noting that they together implemented many activities and launched effective initiatives to raise awareness about human rights and spread its culture among the community.
He commented the distinct role of the Department locally and internationally in the areas of training and rehabilitation, spreading this culture among the ministry’s employees and the community, and educating inmates and penal institutions.
The UN official said the Department was an active partner of the Centre.
He said the Centre has achieved the desired success in the past five years thanks to the support given by the Qatar and the co-operation and assistance of the authorities, which resulted in organising activities and regional and international conferences and events, as well as visits of international human rights officials to Doha.
