Al Khor Commercial Street opens to traffic

The Al Khor Commercial Street was fully opened to traffic on Monday after most of the development works on the project was completed, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) announced.

The remaining works along the side of the street will be completed by the end of the year, according to a press statement from the authority.
The Al Khor Commercial Street Development Project aims to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion, as well as provide developed roads and infrastructure to serve business owners, residents and visitors to the area, the statement notes, adding that the initiative is part of Ashghal's efforts to "provide world-class infrastructure across the country."
Project works included developing the existing 5.5km-long street and increasing its lane width to 16-40m, which would enable smoother traffic flow for the area’s residents and visitors, in addition to building comprehensive service roads with additional car parking areas for the owners and visitors of commercial establishments there, Ashghal said.
The project also included the construction of safe entrances and exits, sidewalks and medians in addition to landscaping works and installation of a lighting system. As part of the project, four new signallised intersections were implemented to ensure traffic safety for road users and serve citizens and residents in this area.
The project included micro-tunnelling works for storm-water drainage, which is 4,200m long and 14m deep, a storm-water treatment plant and a lagoon to collect storm water. This is in addition to laying water network lines and converting electrical cables for a total length of 9,600m to meet the needs of various service entities in the country.
The project also serves 110 residential plots, 60 commercial shops, three schools and three mosques, as well as around 400 car parking lots.
The Al Khor Commercial Street Development Project is part of the Roads and Integrated Infrastructure Projects for Local Areas Programme implemented by Ashghal, which aims to upgrade the infrastructure of existing areas and construct comprehensive infrastructure for new areas that lack those services.
