Qatar has made great strides for the advancement and empowerment of women and gender equality, a senior official said.
Women in Qatar enjoy all rights, guaranteed by the Qatari Constitution which provides for equality between all citizens in rights and duties, and equality of all before the law without discrimination, member of Qatar’s delegation participating in the 71 session of the UN General Assembly Nora Salem al-Muraikhi said in her address a the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly on Item (27).
She noted that Qatar National Vision 2030 seeks to enable women play their important and influential roles in all areas of life, pointing out to the National Development Strategy of Qatar (2011 to 2016) which included an action plan to promote the empowerment of women through education, capacity building, removing barriers and promoting the role of women in leadership at all levels.
Nora Salem al-Muraikhi said Qatar’s National Development Strategy stresses on family cohesion and empowerment of women with a view to maintaining a strong family that is supported and socially protected, through achieving a balance between work and family responsibilities.
In the framework of the implementation of this strategy, the state has worked to expand child-care facilities and to adopt more appropriate work culture for women.
She also highlighted Qatar efforts to eliminate violence against women which contribute to the achievement of development, and promote peace and social security.
In order to enable Qatari women in the economic field and investment, Qatar has been working to strengthen and enhance the role of women in economic decision-making and to encourage them to contribute to the establishment of various investment projects.
She reiterated that Qatar commitment to the empowerment of women in exercising all their rights and their participation in all aspects of life.
Meanwhile, Qatar has stressed the importance of exercising universal jurisdiction in accordance with the agreed mechanisms, and in the framework of international co-operation.
Addressing the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly, member of Qatar’s delegation participating in the UNGA 71 session, Asmaa Jumaa al-Sulaiti stressed the importance of taking into account the balance between the gradual development of the principle of universal jurisdiction and the respect for the principle of fairness and the principles contained in the UN Charter, including sovereign equality, and other provisions of international law.
She highlighted Qatar’s attention to the universal jurisdiction based on its well-known support of the international community’s efforts, and co-operation among nations, to counter international crimes and serious violations of human rights.
She pointed out that Qatar considers the issue of universal jurisdiction as a mechanism of the rule of law to ensure fair justice and the fight against impunity for serious crimes and violations of international law and human rights.
Also yesterday, Qatar affirmed its belief in the importance of sustainable development as a key factor for the stability and prosperity of people.
Addressing the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly on item (19) on Sustainable Development, member of Qatar’s delegation Abdulrahman al-Sheib said that Qatar has been a pioneer in adopting policies that ensure sustainable development.
Qatar has developed a comprehensive national strategy for development, according to the Qatar National Vision 2030.
In this regard, he underlined Qatar’s exceptional and great attention to improve the quality of education, and giving an opportunity to everyone to get quality education and gain experience out of its belief in the importance of investing in human resources, especially young people, who are partners and key shareholders in achieving the sustainable development.
