Doha and suburbs to get 15 new flyovers

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has announced a plan to establish 15 pedestrian flyovers within Doha and its suburbs.
“The move is meant to maintain the safety of pedestrians and keep up with the urban development in Doha in co-ordination with the Roads Department at the Ministry of Transport and Communication,” an official source at MME explained.
The Qatar Cabinet had given its nod earlier this month to a draft decision by  the Minister of Municipality and Environment establishing a committee that will oversee the implementation of different stages of an agreement for building pedestrian bridges.
The law states that the committee will be chaired by a representative from the Ministry of Municipality and Environment while representatives of all designated authorities will be members of the panel, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
The committee will be charged with following up on the work carried out by the company implementing the project. It will also operate the bridges and ensure that the construction is progressing within the set timeframe and is compatible with the designs.
The MME source stated yesterday that the design of  the pedestrian flyovers has taken into consideration the technical development in construction and would employ the most sophisticated technologies to provide the users with all the possible means of convenience.
The available services on pedestrian flyovers would include shops, restaurants, ATMs, toilets and other related services. They  will also be equipped with escalators and lifts to benefit the elderly and physically challenged. Besides, the design would take into consideration the cultural and urban nature of the surrounding area.
A committee has been formed including MME, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), the Traffic Department and Qatar Development Bank, to supervise the project, according to a schedule and ensure that the design is implemented properly, in addition to resolving any potential difficulties and challenges.
