Qatar Charity (QC) has carried out a field survey in Al Hudaydah, Yemen, to identify the requirements of people living there and alleviate their suffering by launching a relief campaign.
Food, shelter, water and health services, particularly after the famine that struck some villages, would be provided as part of the campaign, QC said in a
statement.
As a part of the survey, more than 15 villages and residential communities were surveyed to identify the situation and the condition of families there. The survey reflected the harsh conditions faced by the families, who struggled to find enough food to survive.
“Many areas lack potable water and families rely on the water pumps of farmers, who are not available in such areas most of the time, not to mention the responsibility that falls upon women and young people to fill water - which aggravates the humanitarian catastrophe in the region,” the statement noted.
Under these conditions of water scarcity and lack of medicines and supplies, disease and epidemics have spread among the population, especially children. The area also lacks access to basic services such as clinics, qualified health staff and proper medical instruments.
The survey also showed that a large proportion of young people faced the challenge of job scarcity while others worked for low wages on a daily basis, which did not cover their basic needs for even a day. People living in these areas do not have basic needs such as clothes, shoes, beds and good houses.
Based on the Al Hudaydah survey results, QC said it was determined to launch an urgent relief campaign, which would include the distribution of food baskets for six months containing a number of basic food items for every house, build caravans for homeless families and provide beds and essential house needs as well as clothes, especially for the approaching winter.
QC will also fix the generator and the main pipes to deliver water to houses, as well as dig artesian wells and provide water tanks to houses. In the health sector, QC will launch a campaign to combat the outbreak of disease in the area and provide emergency health assistance to severe cases and rehabilitation of health units.
Qatar Charity had conducted a full field survey earlier this year as part of the “Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen Conference; Challenges and Prospects of the Humanitarian Response”, which was organised by QC in collaboration with 13 international and regional organisations.
