Katara – the Cultural Village, in collaboration with the embassy of Portugal in Doha, has inaugurated a modern jewellery exhibition by a Portuguese artist named ‘Mary.’
The exhibition, which runs until October 30 at Katara’s building 22, gallery 2 from 10am to 10pm, features 20 silver pieces showcased in five groups and inspired by the Islamic decorative culture.
Among the collections are Resgate by Topazio, Water Moon, Nests, Criselefantinas and Fatima’s Hand.
“This demonstrates our keenness and determination to offer our audiences a diverse package of creative artistic works from various cultures to enrich their knowledge of the global cultural movement,” Katara general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti said. He noted that the exhibition is full of deep and rich artistic themes inspired by the Islamic culture and it covers several creative fields such as architecture.
According to Mary, many people in Portugal show a lot of interest to have such unique artistic works displayed at their own homes.
The artist has been preparing for this exhibition for two years.
“It all started when my two daughters got married and I found myself with less responsibilities and more time to do the things I love. There are memories, stories and feelings that live inside each of us and need to be expressed,” she said.
Mary stressed that the Islamic culture has left a great influence on her and inspired many pieces she has put on display.
“There were some pieces inspired by my grandmother’s old house and the trappings I used to see around on the walls and floors. Most of the designing ideas and themes came to me without planning but the outcome of the artistic pieces caught me by surprise as I felt they were crafted by inner power and true passion,” she noted.
