Large quantities of food unfit for human consumption and rotten fish have been seized during a surprise inspection campaign, targeting street vendors, by Al Sheehaniya Municipality.
The Municipal Affairs Department at the municipality conducted the campaign in the farms area on Friday.
The campaign was supervised by Mohamed Saif al-Hajri, director of the municipality, and saw the participation of the police as well as the Public Cleaning Department.
Meanwhile, Al Wakrah Municipality has temporarily closed three outlets for violating food safety regulations.
Over the past week, Al Wakrah Municipality director Mansour Ajran al-Buainain issued three administrative decisions to close two restaurants for a period of seven days each and a shop selling fruits and vegetables for eight days, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) said in a press statement.
While the restaurants were penalised for having food unfit for human consumption, rotten fruits and vegetables were found at the shop, the statement noted.
Inspectors from the Health Control Department carried out the implementation of the closure orders.
Bird traps sale detected
In another development, the MME detected the sale of bird traps and other devices - used to attract and hunt birds - at some shops in the Al Zubarah area. The campaign was conducted by the Department of Environment Protection, Protectorates and Wildlife in co-operation with Al Shamal security patrols.
The initiative resulted in the seizure of 22 devices for attracting birds and 145 speakers. Violation reports were issued and necessary legal procedures initiated against the violators.
Awareness activities
The MME's department of communications and public relations has conducted awareness activities at Abi Ayyoub Al Ansari Ideal Independent School, with around 50 students taking part. A lecture was delivered on the topic, "The importance of plants and their role in maintaining the environment", and the students also took part in a clean-up campaign inside the school.
Al Wakrah Shell Roundabout
Al Wakrah Municipality (Maintenance Section) has also accomplished a project for the maintenance of Shell Roundabout in Al Wakrah. This included work on the concrete structure of the shell, painting and lighting jobs and interlock renovation.
Meanwhile, the MME's General Cleanliness Department has cleared Doha Corniche and the navigation port of garbage, abandoned items and materials.
