The Croatian embassy issued more than 1,300 visas last year to Qatar residents, ambassador Tomislav Bosnjak told Gulf Times.
"This is apart from several other Qatar nationals who visited Croatia using Schengen visas as part of their travels in other parts of Europe," he explained.
"Croatia is looking forward to receive more people from Qatar as part of its efforts to give the tourism sector a good boost," the envoy stated while pointing out that the well-connected Eastern European country is less than five hours by air from Doha.
Croatia, which has in Doha its only embassy in the Gulf region, may also open an embassy in Kuwait soon. Currently, a number of Gulf residents are showing interest to visiting the Balkan country, inquiries found. VFS Global is now handling visa related matters for Croatia in Qatar.
"Croatia has plans to hold a cultural festival at Katara next year," revealed the ambassador who recalled that the last festival at Katara generated enormous interest among Qatar residents.
The services of Croatian IT professionals are increasingly being sought in the region's countries, including Qatar, according to Bosnjak.
"For instance, the Qatar Stars League which started a month ago, has been using Comet package developed by Analyticon, an IT company from Croatia. Now the football leagues of Argentina and Ocenia region are also using the same IT package," he said.
The ambassador also said a Croatian software to handle fiscal issues of governments too has been of great demand at various levels. A number of pilots from Croatia are serving Qatar Airways and other regional airlines, he added.
