More than 70 chemical engineering alumni of Qatar University’s College of Engineering (QU-CENG) participated in Al Majilis event.

Organised by the Department of Chemical Engineering at QU-CENG, in collaboration with Qatar Shell, the event aims to share the department’s current status and seek feedback towards continuous improvement.

Attendees included CENG dean Dr Khalifa al-Khalifa, Chemical Engineering Department head professor Ramazan Kahraman, Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre vice president Youssif A Saleh, as well as CENG faculty, current students and staff.

Saleh, keynote speaker at the event, stressed the importance of maintaining relationships with faculty and fellow students long after graduation.

“Even though we are no longer students at QU, we remain connected to the university and to each other by the knowledge and experience we gained here,” he said. “As we use education to help Qatar grow, we should also continue to help each other learn and advance.”

The event’s agenda included panel discussions led by Qatargas asset manager Ibrahim Bawazir and Ras Laffan Terminal operations manager Abdalla Idris. They discussed issues related to the skills chemical engineering graduates need to be successful, and also shared career experiences.

The event also awarded QU chemical engineering alumni for their contributions over the years to the industry in the country.

QU chemical engineering alumni and Qatargas Operations COO Ahmed Hilal al-Mohannadi was presented the “Al-Zubara Lifetime Achievement Award” while QU chemical engineering alumni and RasGas Process Engineering manager Fawaz al-Shammari received “Al-Shaqab Chemical Engineer Alumni Award”.

Al-Khalifa noted that CENG alumni are employed across a wide range of professions in Qatar and that the Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the main providers of graduates to local institutions.

“CENG has seen a steady increase in the number of engineering alumni working in key organisations in Qatar, and we are very proud of the impact they are having on both the industry and the State of Qatar,” he said.

Echoing al-Khalifa’s statement, Kahraman said: “The gathering highlights QU’s goal to foster a spirit of loyalty and collegiality among the university and alumni, current students and the Department of Chemical Engineering Department.”
