In the true tradition of Bollywood both of them have never really openly admitted to being in a relationship, but the whole world knows that Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are together. And have been so for a long time — from when they shot Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, which released in 2013 and went on to be a big superhot.
Their story began with the world noticing them as very comfortable, constantly laughing and smiling, when together. As the years progressed Ranveer became increasingly open about professing his intentions while Deepika remained cautious, though never explicitly denying it.
It was by then clear that there was more than just friendship between the two. And, as is also the norm with relationships between stars, they began to be seen going with each other for events and parties. They were spotted holidaying and dropping into the sets of each other even when the movies were being shot in foreign locations.
When their families were also spotted along with the two, then it was thought that this might be headed into something more permanent. But is there a twist in the tale now? And is it being driven by the success that Deepika has been having in Hollywood which has meant relocating temporarily there?
There have been rumours lately that Deepika and Ranveer are headed for a split. One report said that Deepika had gone to be with Ranveer for a movie that he was shooting in Paris and they had a quarrel there.
Another rumour suggests that she said in an interview about not having any plans to marry or that she was even engaged. And this might have a driven a wedge with Ranveer. It has also lately been coming to the notice of people that there just haven’t been any photo ops of the two together.
Ranveer and Deepika have both been asked about whether there are any such issues. In a newspaper interview Deepika fobbed it off with a general answer on how she was immune to the all the rumours that appeared about her personal life in the media.
Ranveer meanwhile in another interview gave a homily on the purity of love and how he wasn’t disturbed by the prying into his personal life, just mildly irritated. In any case, Deepika has now returned to Bollywood having taken up a film offer and more time here might put the relationship on the track again. That is if it had been derailed in the first place.
Aunty talks
Kareena Kapoor is pregnant and will soon be a mother but Soha Ali Khan, her sister-in-law, doesn’t take too kindly to be interrogated about it.
Soha can be seen in a recently released movie — which deals with the riots against Sikhs that took place in 1984 in Delhi after Indira Gandhi’s assassination — and so is giving media interviews.
In one such to an online film magazine, she was asked about how it felt to be a soon-to-be-aunt and her reply was acerbic. She said people repeatedly question her on this and she has no idea what to say. That while she was excited, what other preparation can one do for something like this. She asked sarcastically whether she should be knitting sweaters!
In another interview to a newspaper Soha spoke about being very excited for Kareena since she was becoming a mother for the first time while her brother and Kareena’s husband Saif Ali Khan had been a father before. She also observed that Kareena was working in movies well into her pregnancy and that was much like how her own mother Sharmila Tagore had done in the past.
Copyright tangle
It is a little bit of a mystery why Amitabh Bachchan continues to work with Ram Gopal Varma. They did make good movies initially but in recent times Varma has been responsible for Bachchan’s most unmemorable roles, in movies like Department.
Their biggest success has been the two Sarkar movies. Now they are making Sarkar 3, which shows that Amitabh still has some faith remaining in Varma even if the rest of Bollywood has long ago given up on him.
Recently Amitabh said in an interview that the shoot may get over even before schedule for the movie. But there is apparently now a legal issue to deal with. A producer has sent a notice to Varma stating that he owns all rights for Sarkar, from the previously released movies to any future sequels.
He has threatened to start legal proceedings if Varma does not respond. Varma has faced such contractual issues before too ever since his star declined. Copyright issues can stall a movie’s release unless not resolved nowadays.
Bad precedent
The tremendous amount of pressure notwithstanding on Karan Johar for having a Pakistani actor in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, the movie’s release was not stopped despite a political party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), threatening to use violence to disrupt its screening.
A few days before the release, the chief minister of Maharashtra brokered a peace between Karan Johar and MNS’s chief Raj Thackeray. The condition for allowing the movie’s release by Thackeray was for Johar to pay Rs5 crore as atonement to an army welfare fund.
He, of course, agreed but the move boomeranged on the government who was thought to have bowed down to threats. Thackeray meanwhile was castigated in the media as an extortionist. Johar came out not really very hurt. The money paid would have meant a cut out of the profits but, on the other hand, the entire episode gave the movie a lot of pre-release publicity. And then to top it off the army refused to accept any such contributions forced in its name.
While Johar might not be too disturbed by the turn of events, it could leave other filmmakers in future vulnerable to such threats. As Farhan Akhtar put it in a media interview, that it had set a “terrible precedent” of making arbitrary illegal demands under the threat of violence on filmmakers. He is producing Raees that has a Pakistani actress in it, but looks like he won’t be agreeing to such demands.
