Opposition BNP to stage ‘big showdown’ on November 7

BNP is making preparations to stage a ‘huge showdown’ ahead of National Revolution and Solidarity Day on November 7 at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital Dhaka.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the plan in a meeting of Dhaka city unit of BNP and also advised leaders and activists to prepare for the event.
Fakhrul said: “We have decided to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 7. We have already taken permission from the police for the event.
“We would like to ensure mass gathering at our rally to prove that BNP is the country’s number-one party. We’ve to demonstrate that there’s no other bigger party than BNP.”
The BNP secretary general also directed his party colleagues to strengthen their campaign for the rally at every ward of the city.
On October 20, BNP announced a 10-day programme, including a rally in Dhaka, to observe the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, marking the civil-military uprising on November 7, 1975.
BNP’s Dhaka city unit convener Mirza Abbas said they will hold a massive ever rally on November 7.
He said: “All our leaders will have to work together to make our rally successful. We want you all to start working for the event right after this meeting.”
Alamgir said the decision on participation in the Zila Parisad polls will come from the meeting with the top leaders of the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The procedure of holding Zila Parishad election is contrary to the fundamental matters of the constitution, the BNP leaders told reporters after a meeting with 20-party alliance leaders.
On October 6, the Zila Parishad (Amendment) Bill, 2016, was passed in the parliament to remove some ambiguities from the Zila Parishad Act, 2000 and clarifying about the formation of electoral college with public representatives from all tiers for Zila Parishad election.
As per the amended act, only the elected representatives of local government bodies will take part in the polling to elect Zila Parisad chairman and members.
