Five suspected addicts were shot dead by masked gunmen while allegedly holding a drug-taking session inside a house in the Philippine capital, police said Tuesday.
Police said the group of gunmen barged into the house in the city of Mandaluyong in the metropolitan Manila area on Monday evening and opened fire on the victims, Chief Superintendent Romulo Sapitula said.
‘The victims were allegedly engaged in a pot session when the suspects entered the residence and shot them,’ said Sapitula, a district police commander.
The suspects were wearing masks and fled after the shooting, Sapitula said.
From July 1 to October 28, 1,736 suspects have been killed in police operations under an aggressive anti-drugs campaign launched by President Rodrigo Duterte, according to police statistics.
Police are also investigating the deaths of 2,153 people during the same period to determine if they are related to illegal drugs.
Some of the deaths are being blamed on vigilantes allegedly carrying out killings of drug suspects without the authorization of the police or other authorities.
