Islamic educators ponder future challenges

The opening ceremony of the 21st Session of the Executive Council of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW) held yesterday at Qatar University (QU) was attended by HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Mohamed Abdul Wahed Ali al-Hammadi.
The two-day event aims to highlight and discuss FUIW’s future plans in the areas of knowledge, research and innovation.
Discussions focused on the numerous research activities that will help FUIW Executive Council achieve its main goals.
QU president Dr Hassan al-Derham said a balanced higher education is the cornerstone to achieving peace and mutual understanding between nations.
“In this regard, Islamic universities play a pivotal role by providing Islamic societies with high-qualified researchers and scholars, which will contribute to the establishment of development strategies and the promotion of intellectual and social growth.”
FUIW executive council chairman and Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University rector Dr Suliman bin Abdallah Aba-Al Khail said there is a crucial need in the Islamic world for wise perception and co-research initiatives that align with FUIW objectives.
“This highlights the key role of scholars and researchers in helping future generations to understand the current situation in the Islamic world, while encouraging them to advance their research activities.”
FUIW secretary general and Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) director general Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri expressed his gratitude to HH the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, for his support to Islamic education in general and FUIW in particular.
Dr al-Derham was presented a trophy by Dr Altwaijri in recognition of his support and efforts in the field of Islamic higher education.
Dr al-Derham also honoured Dr Altwaijri for his support to enhance education and research within Islamic universities.
On the sidelines of the event, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Dr Altwaijri and the Arab Union for Voluntary Work secretary general Yousef al-Kazim.
