Prime Minister Shekh Hasina yesterday said Bangladesh values high its ties with Myanmar being the close-door neighbour as visiting Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar Air Force General Khin Aung Myint called on her at her office.
“As a close-door neighbour, Bangladesh always gives values to good relations and co-operation with Myanmar … we share historic relations with Myanmar,” premier’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim quoted her as telling the Myanmar’s air chief during his courtesy call.
He said the prime minister referred to the two neighbours’ long engagements in trade on borders and sea routes.
Karim said the premier discussed different issues relating to mutual interests with General Myint who showed keen interest in replicating Bangladesh’s experience in building cyclone shelter centres on Myanmar’s coastlines.
The prime minister, he said, mentioned about the insurgency problems in the neighbouring country and said Bangladesh would never allow the Myanmar insurgents to use its soil.
She said Bangladesh earlier experienced nearly identical insurgency problems in the Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) but “we resolved the conflict without intervention of any other country”.
General Myint thanked the premier for Bangladesh’s support to Myanmar against terrorist activities on the border saying now the Myanmar frontier is
under control.
The Myanmar official also appreciated Bangladesh’s socioeconomic progress under Hasina’s leadership.
