More than 56,000 benefit from QRCS social initiatives

Qatar Red Crescent Society’s (QRCS) various programmes this year pegged at QR12mn have benefited more than 56,000 residents in the country.
In a press statement, QRCS noted that a total of QR5mn aid had been given to more than 2,600 poor families (9,600 people) as part of its socio-economic empowerment programme.
QRCS’s patient support fund for health empowerment had partly or fully covered the costs of treatment such as surgeries or medications for needy patients.
Socio-psychological support programmes also helped the vulnerable groups adapt and overcome their life challenges. This year, QRCS spent QR3mn as health aid for more than 600 patients with serious health problems. Financial and non-financial aid was given to low-income families in special seasons such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. In 2016, these provisions amounted to QR2mn and supported 7,500 beneficiaries.
In partnership with the Ministry of Interior, Qatar Scientific Club and Qatar Independent Technical School, QRCS held training workshops and rehabilitation lectures for 484 penitentiary inmates and their families with QR1mn funding from Qatar Central Bank’s Social and Sport Contribution Fund. As part of its educational empowerment, QRCS helped 166 students cover part or all of their tuition fees, in addition to 40 students with special needs, pegged at QR80,000.
QRCS’s school and community awareness programme benefited around 12,886 students, teachers, administrative staff, bus supervisors and parents, amounting to QR600,000.
With QR930,000 funding from Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC, QRCS distributed food meals, water and juice bottles, and hygiene kits to 25,000 expatriate workers countrywide.
This year, QRCS held specialised professional and academic courses for 155 women at a cost of QR35,000, including “Springboard” and “Good Governance”. Also, there were national and international events that cost QR35,000 and which benefited 2,000 people, mainly children.
In a press statement, QRCS stressed that it continues to do its role in the Qatari society as a leading humanitarian and volunteering organisation that seeks the advancement of both individual and society.
Over the course of 2016, QRCS has implemented dozens of cultural, social, health and educational programmes for the benefit of vulnerable groups.
