The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) organised a visit to the Doha West Sewage Treatment Works project site for a group of 60 students from Middle East International School as part of a community outreach
programme.
The authority organises visits and tours to its project sites throughout the year. These visits include presentations by project engineers, which explain all the details and benefits of projects such as those involving road networks or the country’s infrastructure, Ashghal has said in a statement.
Further, Ashghal stressed its community outreach programme aims to promote awareness about the authority’s projects across the country, and keep different segments of the public informed about the projects’ development stages, the progress achieved and the works
currently under way.
Prior to the Doha West Sewage Treatment Works project tour, students attended a presentation in which they were briefed on the details and benefits of the project. They were then accompanied on a tour of the site, where they were given a detailed explanation of the project. They observed the work achieved so far on the ground.
The authority is implementing the fifth expansion of the Doha West Sewage Treatment Works, which seeks to increase the plant’s capacity to 280,000 cubic metres per day. The treatment plant, located in Al Sailiya, had begun operations with a capacity of around 20,000 cubic metres a day. Due to a population rise, the plant was expanded several times until its capacity reached about 174,500 cubic metres after the fourth expansion, the
statement noted.
A reception sewage tank terminal with a capacity of up to 50,000 cubic metres per day was constructed as an alternative to the Al Karanah landfill, which required the implementation of a fifth expansion to increase the plant’s capacity to 280,000 cubic metres a day.
The fifth expansion works include secondary treatment, sludge treatment and drying, tertiary treatment, construction of treated water pumping station, and the construction of a new system to sterilise treated water without affecting the natural environment surrounding the
treatment plant.
The visit comes as part of Ashghal’s social responsibility and its aim to strengthen the public’s awareness of the authority’s role in developing the country’s
infrastructure, the statement adds.
