Hosts Qatar won two medals on the penultimate day of the 49th CISM World Military Shooting Championship at Losail Shooting Range yesterday.
Both the medals came in team events, with the men clinching silver in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event behind China, while the women winning the skeet event. Qatar so far have four medals in the championship where Germany leads the medals tally followed by China.
The Qatari trio of Oleg Engachev, Ivan Bidniak and Konstantin Maltsev finished with a score of 1737, while the winning team from China of Zheng Gao, Zhenxiang Xie and Yongde Jin talled 1755. The Russian trio of Aleksei Klimov, Viacheslav Kalyuzhnyy and Anton Guryanov took bronze.
In the women’s competition, trio of Sarah Mohamed, Hajar Mohamed and Reem al-Sharshani helped the hosts to pick the bronze medal. The Qatar girls, who had won the skeet event at Asian Shotgun Championship in Abu Dhabi recently, were successful in shooting down 200 targets.
The Russians – Marina Belikova, Anastasiia Krakhmaleva and Maria Meleshchenko – were in superb form and won the gold medal with a championship record, shooting down 206 clay targets while China took silver, having shot two targets less than the champions. The Chinese team comprised of Zhang Heng, Che Yufei and Zhou Ying.
In the other events decided yesterday, Russians continued their domination in the women’s skeet individual by winning two medals.
Having won the team gold, Marina Belikova maintained her fine run in the individual event to take the gold followed by Simona Scocchetti of Italy, while Anastasiia Krakhmaleva took the bronze winning the shoot-out with Wenzel Christine of Germany. Qatar’s Sarah Mohamed finished sixth.
Germany won team gold in the 50m Rifle 3 positions for women, followed by Switzerland and Russia. Norway took the gold in the 330m Rapid Fire for men, while Austria took silver and Denmark the bronze.
Korea won one medal in the 50m Rifle 3 positions in the individual women’s event.
Song Hee took the top place pipping Franziska Peer of Austria and Alena Nizkoshapskaia of Russia.
Over 700 shooters from 50 countries are taking part in the championship which ends with today’s closing ceremony at 5.30pm.
